“Informe Plus+” dedicates an episode to the legend of Wilfred Agbonavbare, the goalkeeper who, despite not being from Vallecas, became an icon among its supporters thanks to his commitment, his sacrifice, and his ability to overcome the xenophobic abuse that today would be condemned in every stadium.
The goalkeeper was not from Vallecas. He never scored a goal, nor is he the player who made the most appearances for Rayo Vallecano. He may not even have been the best goalkeeper in the club’s history. And yet, Rayo’s supporters have elevated him to legendary status. As contradictory as it may seem, a Nigerian player came to embody the values of this unique neighborhood better than anyone else.
“One of the legacies he left is the fight against racism. I wish I had been able to play alongside with him; he would have fit perfectly in today’s dressing room,” says Isi Palazón.
Former Rayo player Pedro Riesco also praised Wilfred’s legacy: “His greatness as a person far exceeds the great footballer he was.”
During the presentation, Carlos Martínez, LALIGA commentator on Movistar Plus+ for more than 35 years, highlighted the goalkeeper’s discreet yet charismatic personality: “For me, the report is a reminder that you can be a hero in many ways, even without intending to be, at a very different kind of club. Rayo is a wonderful historical anomaly. The bond between Rayo and the neighborhood is truly striking. Michael always said that there are very few traces of romanticism left in football, but Vallecas is one of them.”
Ángel Huerta, the journalist behind the documentary and with a long career in this format, emphasized that this story “is Informe Plus in its purest form,” because of all the themes it addresses and the stature of its protagonist.
In “Informe Plus+ | Eternal Wilfred,” key figures of the club take part, including two former Rayo Vallecano coaches: the current Girona manager, Míchel, and West Ham’s assistant manager, Paco Jémez, as well as former players such as Cota and Onésimo, alongside many other notable voices sharing their memories and perspectives on an irreplaceable figure.
This story joins those of other major figures in Spanish sport such as Saúl Craviotto, Carolina Marín, or Pepe Reina. In addition, Movistar Plus+ also offers an extensive catalogue for enjoying sport from every possible angle, including documentaries such as “Luis Enrique: you have no **** idea,” “Verdeliss: 777,” and “Morata: they don’t know who I am,” as well as interviews in Universo Valdano featuring personalities such as Mbappé and Rafa Nadal.
