R. Zaragoza completed a spectacular comeback at Montilivi against Girona FC to reach the playoff final. After losing 0-3 at La Romareda against the Catalan side, it looked as if the dream was over, however they managed to turn the game around in the second leg, winning 1-4.
This is not the first time the playoffs have seen a comeback, however Zaragoza’s is the most spectacular given everything was against them, including the fact they were away from home meaning it is the first comeback achieved as the visitors.
The two previous comebacks came about in the first-ever playoffs in the 2010-11 season, both in the semi-finals, just like Zaragoza’s. The first side to achieve it was Granada CF. The Andalusian outfit had lost at Balaídos 1-0 against RC Celta, however in the return leg at their Los Cármenes stadium, they managed to draw on aggregate before winning on penalties.
A day later there was another. Elche CF had lost 1-0 at the Estadio José Zorrilla against R. Valladolid CF, but they booked their place in the finals with a win at the Estadio Martínez Valero. The Franjiverdes won 3-1 to play Granada in the final, however it was the latter who would take the win and earn a place in Liga BBVA.
R. Zaragoza are the third side to complete a comeback in the Liga BBVA promotion playoffs. Without doubt, it was the most epic given the result and where they achieved it.
