What became of...Olaizola

We look back at the career of the legendary RCD Mallorca player, one of the pillars of the Balearic side during the 90s.

Previously... Javier Olaizola (San Sebastián, 28 Noviembre de 1969) was one of the most important defenders for RCD Mallorca during the 1990s. The Basque, who began his professional career with SD Ebiar in 1991, also played for Real Burgos before joining the Mallorquin team, then in the Liga Adelante, where he consolidated as a player. From 1995 to 2004, the central defender wore the shirt of the Balearic side with whom he achieved promotion two years after his arrival. He wore the captain’s armband for many years and helped win various important trophies for the club before retiring from football.

His achievements... As a Mallorca player, Olaizola had an active role to play in the team’s promotion to the Liga BBVA in the 1996-97 season. The central defender, moreover, won the Spanish Supercup in 1998 and the Copa del Rey during the 2002-03 season.

After hanging up his boots... He retired in 2004 after nine years with Mallorca, the team with which he also began his career as a coach. After numerous years training the club’s youth teams, Olaizola managed the first team for the final three games of the 2013-14 season, achieving survival in the Liga Adelante. Currently, he coaches RCD Mallorca B.

Did you know?... Javier Olaizola is the brother of Julio Olaizola, the experienced Real Sociedad player. The defender was also one of the pillars of the Basque team during their golden era in the 80s, when they won the Liga BBVA twice and a Copa del Rey.
