Matchday 29 in the Liga Adelante ended with a new leader, a total of six draws and the confirmation that the battle for the top two places is set to be closer than ever. With each passing week this intensely competitive league is getting more fragmented, to the point that any club could go from fighting for survival to propelling themselves into the battle for promotion.
Las Palmas knocked off top spot for first time in 13 weeks
The Canary Islanders are a clear example of the competitive nature of the Liga Adelante at the moment. The team coached by Paco Herrera had been top of the table since beating CD Leganés 1-0 on 6 December 2014 but surrendered top spot on Sunday to Real Betis after losing 3-0 at home to the Seville club. Herrera’s men drop down to fourth place as a result, a big fall for a team that in recent weeks has looked very solid.
R. Valladolid CF, meanwhile, compensated for their 4-0 defeat at Betis the previous week by beating CD Numancia by the same scoreline. R. Sporting also won 1-0 at Leganés, while Girona, who have not lost at home since 7 December, drew 2-2 with Albacete B, making the difference between the first and fourth placed team just four points.
Midfielders light up Liga Adelante
It’s not just the strikers that have been scoring the goals. A total of 11 goals were scored by midfielders on the last matchday, most notably AD Alcorcón’s Facundo Guichón and Borja Granero of R. Racing C, as both scored for the second week running.
Valladolid's David Timor also stood out as he scored two goals in his side's victory. The Valladolid player has now scored six goals in the Liga Adelante this season and every time he scores, his team end up taking the three points.
CD Mirandés stay in the hunt for play-offs
Urko Vera found his goalscoring boots again at just the right time for Mirandés, who beat Ponferradina 2-1 thanks to the Basque strikers two goals. Vera has now scored 14 goals this season, which have translated into 27 points for his side, eight wins and three draws. Now the team coached by Carlos Terrazas sit in 11th place in the league, just six points behind R. Zaragoza in sixth place.
Battle at the bottom grows ever more tense
A total of 10 teams, starting with the bottom side up to the team in 13th, picked up between one and three points this weekend in the Liga Adelante. All the teams are desperate to stay up and are running our of opportunities to stay in the Liga Adelante for another year. D. Alavés, who have now gone four consecutive matches in a row without losing at home, beat RCD Mallorca to put breathing space between them and the chasing pack, while the other teams picked up a point each.
Racing are still unbeaten since Javier Pinillos took over as coach, while Albacete and CD Tenerife have gone five games without losing, and UE Llagostera boast an impressive recent run of four wins and two defeats in their last matches in the Liga Adelante. The fight to avoid relegation is now more intriguing than ever in this league, which every team is scalping for their lives to stay in.
