The last month in the Liga Adelante gave us great moments, players in terrific form and teams going at it hammer and tongs. Real Betis' promotion, the equal battle for second spot between Girona FC and R. Sporting, and UD Las Palmas and R. Valladolid CF's qualification for the play-offs have had a big influence on the ideal XI for the month of May, chosen by the writers of LFP.es
In goal
It is often said that you start to build a house with cement, and that's what Girona FC have done, basing their strength in defence and above all in goal. Isaac Becerra has been one of the best custodians in the Liga Adelante and enjoyed a great month, conceding just three goals in six games. He also kept four clean sheets.
At. Osasuna, D. Alavés, UE Llagostera and RCD Mallorca all suffered from Isaac Becerra's stellar performances, with neither team managing to put one past the goalkeeper. In the 41 games played this season in the Liga Adelante, the goalkeeper has conceded just 34 goals, making him one of the best goalkeepers of the season in the Liga Adelante.
The defence
This ideal XI has a conventional back four, comprised of two players from R. Sporting, Alberto Lora and Bernardo Espinosa, one from R. Zaragoza, Jesús Vallejo, and one from R. Valladolid CF, Carlos Peña. Lora continues to be a key performer for Sporting, who are pushing for promotion. He shares this role in the team with Bernardo. The marshall of the Gijón defence also contributes goals from set plays, such as scoring in the 3-1 win over R. Racing C.
The youngster Jesús Vallejo is becoming a key man for Zaragoza, the other team aspiring to make it into the play-offs. The centre-back is one of the first names on the team sheet for Popović and his form in May has vindicated his coach's faith. The Valladolid full-back, Carlos Peña, completes the back four. He played four of the six games in the month and scored a goal, against RC Recreativo.
The midfield
Óscar González, of R. Valladolid CF, Jonathan Viera, of UD Las Palmas, and Sergio Gontán 'Keko', of Albacete B., comprise the midfield. The blanquivioletas captain, Óscar, performed at an excellent level throughout the month, and scored two goals.
The Albacete winger has scored three goals this month, two of them in a comeback against UE Llagostera which clinched Albacete's status in the Liga Adelante. Jonathan Viera completes the midfield after having an excellent month. The Canary Islander scored five goals in six games in May and, interestingly, in the only game he did not score, his team ended up losing.
The attack
Goals, goals and more goals. That's the common denominator for the three strikers chosen by the writers of LFP.es in May. Two Betis strikers, Rubén Castro and Jorge Molina, and Girona hitman Jaime Mata are the three forwards. Rubén Castro, top scorer in the Liga Adelante this season, scored nine goals in six games in May, hitting four braces. Without a doubt, he was a key reason why Betis were promoted to the Liga BBVA.
Alongside him in the Betis attack is Jorge Molina, who also proved his worth in May. The Alicante marksman scored four goals that were crucial to the Seville club getting promoted. Jaime Mata completes the attacking trident. The Girona forward scored five of the 10 goals he has scored this season in May. He scored doubles against At. Osasuna and D. Alavés, as well as the equalising goal in the win over FC Barcelona B.
