A good defense has become one of the most important keys to get promotion to Liga BBVA. This is confirmed by the data of the last ten seasons of the competition, in which seven times, being the least scored team meant promotion.
In the last ten years, Elche CF and R. Sporting share the honor of being the clubs with fewer goals conceded with only 27 goals against. The "ilicitanos" achieved the record during the 2012/2013 season, while the Asturian team matched that mark last season.
However, in the last decade there are three exceptions with clubs that failed to promote despite finishing the season as the least scored team. In the 2007/2008 season CD Castellón ended with 37 goals against, but could not get promotion. It was the second fewest, CD Numancia, who came to Liga BBVA having received 38 goals.
A season later, Real Sociedad could not get the target neither despite having occupied the first position in this track record. The "Donostiarras" conceded 38 goals, but the first place went to Xerez, despite having 42 goals against. Nor Recreativo de Huelva could achieve the promotion to Liga BBVA in the 2010/2011 season. The "onubense· team ended the campaign with 37 goals conceded, but it was not enough to rise to the top competition, which got Real Betis as the winner of the league, with 44 goals against.
