RCD Deportivo and Villarreal CF meet on matchday 35 in the Liga BBVA in a game in which both sides need to win for different reasons.
The hosts need to win to move closer to survival, as they have gone 12 matches without winning. Meanwhile, the visitors will be looking to end their own hapless spell of form which has seen them go eight matches without tasting victory. If Marcelino’s side do get the win they will stay in the fight for sixth place, a position they currently occupy with 53 points.
Team news
Cezary Wilk is Deportivo’s only unavailable player, but Villarreal have a full-to-bursting treatment room, with Sergio Asenjo, Denís Chéryshev, Bruno Soriano, Mateo Musacchio, Giovani dos Santos and Ikechukwu Uche all injured.
The view from the dugouts
Deportivo coach Víctor Sánchez said before the game: “We have to recover as soon as possible from our last defeat (the 4-0 loss at Elche) as soon as posible so we can compete against Villarreal.” He also spoke about his team’s fight to avoid relegation: “We won’t make any bets, not on ourselves or any other team.” His opposite number Marcelino meanwhile said his team “need to keep competing and forget about our many injuries”. On his side’s opponents, he called Deportivo “a team fighting for their lives, that pick up quite a lot of points at home.”
