Real Madrid qualified for the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League after beating Atlético Madrid 1-0 in the quarter finals thanks to a late goal by Javier Hernández. Los blancos join fellow Liga BBVA side FC Barcelona, plus FC Bayern München and Juventus in Friday's draw, where they will discover who they will need to get past in order to make it to the final in Berlin.

The two Madrid sides could not build on the 0-0 scoreline from the first leg in the first half. After a dominant display by Madrid in the opening stages, Atlético found their feet in the game and began to exert their control, although their only clear chance came from a distance effort from Jesús Gámez which Iker Casillas blocked with few problems. Madrid’s attacking trio of James Rodríguez,

Javier 'Chicharito' Hernández and Cristiano Ronaldo managed to create several chances, but they could not beat the impenetrable Jan Oblak in goal.

The two teams came out with renewed energy after the break. Chicharito had another clear chance but shot wide of the far post, making for an enthralling finish to the game. In the 80th minute James also shot wide of the far post as Madrid continued to dominate, and just seven minutes later, with extra-time looming, Chicharito settled the match. James brought the ball into the area and gave it to Ronaldo, who squared it to the Mexican, who tapped into the empty net to send Madrid into the semi-finals for a fifth year in a row.
