Old foes who hold fond memories stand between Spain and Euros quarters

La Roja are up against Italy – whom they overcame in the last two editions of the event – in the round of 16.

The moment of truth is here. The Spanish national team face a testing tie in the round of 16 of Euro 2016 today at the Stade de France, in Saint-Denis, where they will lock horns with Italy at 18:00 CET.

After impressing in convincing wins over the Czech Republic and Turkey, Vicente del Bosque's men endured a disappointing conclusion to the group stage, succumbing to a dramatic defeat to Croatia and in the process condemning themselves to a tough last-16 meeting with familiar opponents Italy. Spain have suffered plenty of heartbreak at the hands of the Azzurri over the years, but have fantastic memories of their most recent encounters, including having beaten the Italians on penalties at the quarter-final stage of Euro 2008 – en route to ending their trophy drought – and having crushed them 4-0 in the 2012 final.

La Roja have a full squad available for the match, while Italy – who also lost their final group-stage fixture, against the Republic of Ireland – will have to make do without injured midfielder Antonio Candreva. Whoever comes out on top will book a quarter-final clash against Germany, who eased through 3-0 against Slovakia.
