Much of the last 16 and quarter-final stages of the LaLiga Promises tournament had to be settled with penalty shoot-outs, a cruel lottery in which the eliminated team's hard work counts for nothing and where the smallest mistake is severely punished.

It was during these make-or-break moments that the LaLiga youngsters' feelings were most clearly visible, both in terms of fear as well as confidence, the complete joy of winning and the absolute devastation after suffering defeat. It is hard to contain such powerful emotions, especially when you are only 11 or 12 years of age.

Five penalty shoot-outs took place on the main pitch of the Villarreal CF Ciudad Deportiva on matchday two of the tournament. Valencia CF and Granada CF had to go through this ordeal on two occasions each. Valencia qualified to the semi-finals, but Granada exited at the quarter-final stage, causing a lot of anguish and tears among their players.

Real Madrid CF, RCD Espanyol, Getafe CF and UD Almería also bowed out after losing on penalties, showing that there is no amount of consoling you can give a team after they have been knocked out early from the tournament of their dreams.
