From April 10 to 13, 2026, LALIGA will celebrate the first Retro Matchday in its history, an unprecedented initiative in European professional soccer in which 38 clubs from LALIGA EA SPORTS and LALIGA HYPERMOTION will take the field wearing new kits inspired by iconic designs from their past. Referees will also participate, wearing a special design through the RFEF’s Referees Technical Committee (CTA).
LALIGA Retro Matchday is conceived as a tangible expression of “A Living Legacy”, transforming club history into an experience that is felt, celebrated, and worn on the field of play. These historic jerseys, reinterpreted for today’s competition, serve as a bridge between generations, connecting the origins of fandom with the way soccer is experienced today. The initiative unites soccer and fashion directly on the pitch, positioning LALIGA as the only one of Europe’s five major leagues to deliver a coordinated activation of this kind.
During Matchday 31 of LALIGA EA SPORTS and Matchday 35 of LALIGA HYPERMOTION, 38 LALIGA clubs will join the initiative by wearing retro kits inspired by historical models from their trajectory.
The Collection That Never Goes Out of Style
LALIGA Retro Matchday brings to life “the collection that never goes out of style”, a concept that turns club history into a contemporary trend. The participating kits will be unveiled on Thursday, March 19, at MBFWMadrid, bringing the legacy of Spanish soccer to one of the creative industry’s leading international showcases. This natural connection between soccer and fashion transcends the field of play, placing club identity at the center of the cultural conversation.
Jaime Blanco, Director of LALIGA’s Club Office, stated: “Retro Matchday is a unique opportunity to honor the history of our clubs and the symbols that have shaped generations of fans. It allows us to bring the past into the present while continuing to build experiences and strengthen the legacy that emotionally connects with supporters. Presenting this collection during Spain’s leading fashion week is the perfect platform to project that identity beyond the field and position soccer at the heart of the cultural and creative conversation.”
A 360º Experience Beyond the Pitch
LALIGA Retro Matchday will extend beyond the kits and the matches themselves, becoming a cross-cutting initiative involving clubs, talent, legends, sponsors, and key stakeholders within the LALIGA ecosystem. Among them is LEGENDS, The Home of Football, a unique space that preserves the history of global soccer and will play a central role in the project in the months ahead.
The broadcast experience will incorporate retro-style graphics with a dedicated visual identity that brings this narrative into television and digital environments. Additional physical and digital activations will amplify the reach of the matchday before and after it takes place. In the coming weeks, the official kit designs from participating clubs will also be revealed. This global rollout reinforces the coherence of the initiative and transforms Retro Matchday into a shared celebration of soccer’s past and present.
The initiative is part of the broader campaign “42 Legacies, 42 Ways of Winning,” which highlights how passion for a club is passed down, inherited, and transformed over time. Through this themed matchday, LALIGA reaffirms its commitment to preserving club identity while continuing to build experiences that celebrate the past without losing sight of the future.
