The first mid-week matchday of the 2016/17 LaLiga Santander campaign was packed with excitement and star-studded performances, especially that of Sevilla FC defender Gabriel Mercado, who was crowned Player of the Matchday (15 points) thanks to his outstanding contribution during #ElGranDerbi between Sevilla and R. Betis, which he capped by scoring the only goal of the game.
Mercado is not the only Sevilla player to make the team. Sergio Escudero, who also put in an impressive defensive performance in the Seville derby, joins the Matchday 5 Best XI thanks to the 12 points he notched up. Meanwhile, Athletic Club also had two players make the team following their 2-1 away win over Granada CF.
Diego Lopez takes his place between the posts following a magnificent performance in RCD Espanyol's win over CA Osasuna, whilst Aymeric Laporte joins Mercado and Escudero in defence.
CD Leganes's Gabriel (14 points), FC Barcelona's Andres Iniesta (13), Villarreal CF's Bruno (13), Athletic's Beñat (13) and Granada CF's Mehdi Carcela (CF) team up in midfield.
The Matchday 5 Best XI attack is led by Real Sociedad striker Willian Jose (14 points) and RC Celta forward Pione Sisto (12).
