Atletico Madrid, Athletic Club, Villarreal CF and Real Sociedad, the four LaLiga Santander representatives in the UEFA Europa League, now know their opponents in the round of 32, after the draw was held in Nyon (Switzerland) on Monday.
Atletico, who disappointingly dropped out of the UEFA Champions League, were the first Spanish team to discover their fate during the draw. Los Rojiblancos begin their push for the Europa League trophy with a trip to Denmark to face FC Copenhagen, with the return match at the Wanda Metropolitano.
Athletic's reward for finishing top of their group is a trip to Russia to test themselves against FC Spartak Moscow, who are familiar with Spanish opposition, having recently faced Sevilla FC in the Champions League. The return leg will be at San Mames.
La Real were drawn against Austrian side FC Salzburg and given that the Basque outfit finished second in their group, they will have to play the return leg away from home.
Finally, group winners Villarreal will have to get the better of European giants Olympique Lyon, with the Estadio de la Ceramica faithful certain to have a pivotal role to play in the second leg in a bid to ensure the club safely progresses to the next round.
The first legs will be played on 15 February 2018, with the return matches a week later on 22 February.
