The first knockout game between RC Deportivo and Real Betis went to penalties after a 1-1 draw and the Galicians progressed with 4-3 shootout triumph. The other games were equally tight. Valencia CF defeated RC Celta 1-0, Levante UD beat Girona FC por 1-0, RCD Espanyol overcame UD Las Palmas 1-0 and Sevilla FC saw Atletico Madrid by the same scoreline.
The hosts Villarreal CF swept past Athletic Club 3-1 while FC Barcelona were 2-0 victors over D.Alaves and Real Madrid edged out Malaga CF 1-0.
Quarter-finals
Deportivo and Valencia kicked off the quarters with another nail-biting match which ended 1-1 and went to penalties. The Galicians held their nerve to progress in the shootout for the second match in a row.
They were joined by FC Barcelona, who also required penalties to make the final four. Sevilla FC took the lead through Antonio Cordero only for Marc Guiu to level and send the match to penalties where the Catalans triumphed 4.3.
Levante UD overcame Real Madrid 2-1 thanks to goals from Daniel Genoves and Iker.
The final semi-final slot was taken by RCD Espanyol, when Hugo scored two minutes from time to knock out the hosts 1-0.
