Atlético rescue a point at the Ciutat de València

Atlético Madrid and Levante UD drew 2-2 on matchday 36 in the Liga BBVA in an evenly matched game. Lucas Alcaraz’s side move up to 14th in the Liga BBVA table with 36 points, five above the drop zone, thanks to the draw, while Diego Simeone’s men stay third, on 77 points, four ahead of Valencia CF in fourth spot with two games left of the season.

The two teams were very organised, with Levante looking to sit back and launch quick transitions, while the Madrid side looked to find space on the wings through full-backs Juanfran Torres and Guilherme Siqueira. There were no clear chances until the first goal went in, which came about when Iván López rolled the ball across the box for David Barral to slot in first time. Diego Simeone’s side took little time to find an equaliser, and in the 35th minute Siqueira found the net after getting on the end of Tiago Mendes’pass.

The visitors took the game by the scruff of the neck after the break but still struggled to create clear chances and it was Levante who scored next. Iván López again put a good cross into the area and Kalu Uche bundled the ball home. The hosts tried to conserve their advantage but Atlético levelled with 10 minutes to go. They struck from a corner whipped in by Koke, with Torres heading home at the near post. Simeone’s side pushed for a winner in the remaining minutes, but the game ended 2-2.
