Atletico and Real Madrid step out for their Champions League quarter-final first legs on Wednesday, after FC Barcelona were beaten 3-0 in Turin in their return to European action.
The holders face a Champions League ‘classic’ against familiar European foes FC Bayern Munich. The teams have done battle on 11 occasions in the tournament at the German side's ground and past results strongly favour the home team: nine victories, one draw and just a single defeat – although the latter came in the last game between the two teams when Madrid beat Bayern 4-0 on the road to their 2014 title. Raphael Varane and Pepe are off limits for Zinedine Zidane, whilst Bayern will be without Mats Hummels.

Also on Wednesday at 20:45 CET, last year’s runners up Atletico receive Leicester City FC at the Vicente Calderon as Los Rojiblancos pursue a third final appearance in four years. Atleti will attempt to make the most of their stadium's fortress status in Europe, having won 28 of their last 34 continental clashes there. The teams have faced each other on four occasions in European competition, Atletico holding the upper hand with three victories and one draw. Augusto Fernandez, Tiago Mendes and Sime Vrsaljko will be forced to sit this one out for the hosts.
